Cheerleader guns for Los Angeles Lakers
Frenchs Forest's Kelly Burke is on the verge of becoming a cheerleader for the world famous Los Angeles Lakers.Ms Burke, 22, will fly out to the US next week to try and beat thousands of dancers for a spot on either the Lakers or Los Angeles Clippers cheerleading squads. Both professional basketball teams are among the most marketable sporting franchises in the US.
And though she will be up against stiff competition, the blonde beauty is confident that being an Australian - who has dual citzenship with the US - will give her an edge.
"This is at least something that will make me stand out," she said. "I'm hoping it will at least make them look at me twice."
Ms Burke, who has been a cheerleader for the Parramatta Eels and the Sydney Kings, decided she wanted to cheer for a US basketball team last year after watching a Lakers game live.
"I travelled to America last year with a girlfriend and watched a game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Lakers where the Lakers won in the last second ... I was just like 'this is what I want to do'," she said.
Ms Burke recently completed a bachelor of commerce, receiving high achievement merit awards.

Dee Why cheerleader enters
Lingerie Football League
by Bryn Kay
MEET the Dee Why cheerleader set to get down and dirty as a
competitor in next year's Australian version of the Lingerie Football
League.Courtney Watts tackled, ran and passed her way on to the Sydney team in the league try-outs last month on the back of successful stints as a cheerleader for the Parramatta Eels and the Sydney Kings National Basketball League team.
And while the blonde bombshell may be easy on the eye in skimpy lingerie, the 23-year-old is adamant she isn't all about just looking good on the field.
"I love football and being a cheerleader it's nice to now be in the field of play rather than on the sidelines ... so bring it on," Ms Watt, a personal trainer, said.
"Even though I'm probably one of the smallest girls (to qualify for the team in trials) I'm fast and defence-wise I can work on that."
And Ms Watts had a message for those who question the legitimacy of lingerie football as a sport.
"We are real women playing real sport," she said.

Feels like forever!! xx
Hello hello Pretty Pom Pom Pixies!
Goodness i feel like i haven't fed my pom pom addiction for such a long time! Ive been missing in action for quite some time now but im back in my throne and what a fabulous and sunny day to get right back into it!!
The NRL season feels like it has just whizzed by so quickly this year and i just want to hit the pause button for a few weeks.... Are you feeling me girlfriends? Each and every game and appearance we get to do just gets more and more fun/exciting and it would be fabulous if the season was just that little teeny tiny bit longer!
New girls (rookie cheerleaders) on each squad are well and truly settled into their teams by now and after having many games under their belts - everyone by this time of the year is really one big tight unit! I personally love seeing the rookies really come into their own after many weeks learning and mastering chorey, new hair and make up tricks and most of all feeling confident out on the field (which can be ever so daunting at first!).
Another favourite of mine is that the Big League Cheerleader of the Year finals are well underway and i just looove seeing the fresh faces from each squad each year! Always so many lovely ladies to chose from and its always fun seeing who makes that exclusive final 4 - then wins it!!!
I have to warn you all though - brace yourselves for a tiny bit of favouritism on my end (ok maybe a lot)- my baby sister Prudence is the yummy entrant for Manly this year and she has made it to the final 16! I burst with pride looking at her in her Seabird Uniform and just love seeing her beautiful pics lighting up the pages of Big League! Go Girl!

Simply the Best
Special Olympics the True Winners
Special Olympics Australia took centre stage on Saturday night and although the Bulldogs earned two competition points claiming the inaugural Special Olympics Cup, it was Special Olympics Australia who was the real winners.
The Special Olympics Cup marks a new era in sporting history, expanding a partnership between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Special Olympics Australia in providing a platform for thousands of Australians with an intellectual disability to reach their personal best both on and off the sporting field.
Special Olympics Australia took centre stage on Saturday as Bulldogs in the Community’s round 13 community partner. Numerous volunteers gave up their time to assist the cause, bucket collecting around the ground and on the concourse at merchandise hut 132.
The true highlight of the game was the 12 Special Olympic Athletes who took centre field in a very inspiring and entertaining pre-game performance of Tina Turner’s classic “Simply the Best”. Dressed in their sparkly blue and white outfits the group who have spent the past couple of weeks perfecting the moves had the crowd captivated, eliciting a round of applause from all who watched.
Bulldogs comedian and ground commentator Rob Shehadie had a chat to Special Olympics Athlete, Mel Eustace who spoke to the crowd about what the Special Olympics means to her.
“We train, play sport, make friends and have healthy and happy lives,” said Mel. “Special Olympics is not about being the best, it is about participating and reaching your personal best.”
Following their performance the group proudly formed the guard of honour with the Belles cheerleaders, loudly cheering the players on to the field. Post game a special presentation was held on field with Arvind Naidu, owner of Retravision who proudly donated $5000 to Special Olympics CEO, Gill Stapleton.
Special Olympics ambassadors Steve Turner and the Rabbitohs Michael Crocker, filling in on behalf of Roy Asotasi took their place on stage with two of the Special Olympics athletes. The athletes presented the Special Olympics Cup to winning Bulldogs Captain Michael Ennis, before having a group photo on stage and on the field with the winning Bulldogs team.
The Special Olympics Cup will be an ongoing reciprocal game which will be hosted by the Rabbitohs in 2013. The Bulldogs may have come away with the two points on Saturday, but the game truly highlighted the Special Olympics and the power of sport to benefit our community and great causes such as the Special Olympics.
Want to win the Match Ball?
Saturday’s game ball signed by the Special Olympic Ambassadors Steve Turner and Roy Asotasi as well as Captain’s Michael Ennis and Michael Crocker is up for grabs. For your chance to win the game ball go to http://www.specialolympics.com.au/events/cup and make a donation.
All donations made prior to 5pm, Wednesday, June 6, 2012 will be placed in a draw for the ball.

Amazing Race kicks off tonight...
Debbie Schipp The Sunday Telegraph
'We're not bimbos' say twins Michelle and Jo as they start their own Amazing Race
THEYRE a reality television talent scouts dream team. White-blonde Barbie beach-girl lookalikes, twin sisters, cheerleaders who love to be the centre of attention.
They love fake tan and dressing up, and shrug off barbs about their looks.
But as they embark on the second series of Amazing Race Australia, contestants Michelle and Jo Troy happily warn you underestimate them at your peril.
The 26-year-old twins from Sydney’s Northern Beaches are NRL cheerleaders as part of the St George Illawarra Dragons’ Flames squad.
They also work for Jetstar as ground crew in Sydney.
And in more than six years of cheerleading and working as promotional models, they’ve heard all the jibes before.
“People will assume a lot of things about us because of how we look,” says Michelle, the older twin by 34 seconds.
“We are cheerleaders, we’ve heard the Barbie doll and bimbo barbs.
“We are judged for what we are on the outside. We’re not bimbos. We’re smart enough to use it to our advantage.
“We have done modelling and promo work for years, so we have developed thick skins.”
The pair leapt at the chance to join Amazing Race after the first Australian version of the show aired last year. It was a ratings success for Channel Seven, with an average of 1.2 million viewers tuning in each week to follow the fortunes of 11 duos as they criss-crossed the world using their wits and their wiles for a shot at the $250,000 to the winner.
This year’s race sees the contestants cross four continents and 65,000 kilometres, and the pace is relentless.
The twins’ opposition includes Tweed Heads indigenous cousins Adam and Dane, Melbourne couple James and Sarah (she has a penchant for cosmetic surgery and high heels – and customised a pair of runners with heels to take into the race), Melbourne policeman duo Shane and Andrew, and Tasmanian flatmates Sticky and Sam (Sticky was born without a left forearm, but has never let that stop him being an action-man)
Amazing Race host Grant Bowler warns there “is lots of big hair” this season.
What Michelle and Jo’s fellow racers might not know is that the girls went to great lengths to prepare for the race – and not just at the hairdresser.
“I think everyone sees us at the start line and says “oh my God, what are these two fluoro-pink topped-wearing blonde things doing? We’re going to walk all over them’,” Michelle says.
“We definitely go in to prove them wrong, and surprise them.”
To prepare for the race, the super-fit twins donned back-packs stacked with phone books to run stairs on the Northern Beaches, and topped it off with a few weeks with a personal trainer.
Having learned Japanese at school, and knowing the value of knowing at least a few words of other languages through their work with weary plane travellers at Jetstar, they added a basic smattering of Spanish and French to their tools for battle – “just in case we needed it”.
Three months several years ago as part of an Australian cheerleading squad in India on the lucrative IPL (Indian Premier League) cricket tour had given them a smattering of Indian language, an awareness of the extremes of poverty and excess, and opened their eyes anew to travel abroad.
The pair then refreshed their knowledge of geography, used flash-cards to learn the flags of the world, made sure they could drive manual transmission cars.
“I didn’t learn to ride a motorbike. Maybe I should have,” Michelle says.
The preparation paid off from the outset – the pair delighting at the response of fellow-racers if they overtook them at any stage in the very first challenge.
“We are very competitive on the show, but we are friendly. We will help other teams, but at the end of the day we just want to get through to the next leg,” she says.
“We surprise teams if we overtake them because the reaction is pretty much “oh my God, it’s the twins beating us? Oh my God.”
“Basically, we’re double trouble.
“Yes, we love getting our hair done and putting our make-up on. What girl doesn’t?
“We’re also know we can use the assumptions people make about us to our advantage.”

The Hog’s Breath Cafe brand will be showcased at Melbourne Storm home games with the cheerleaders’ uniforms displaying the Hog’s Breath Cafe logo, plus Hog’s Breath Cafe mascot, Hogster, will be cheering on the team alongside Storm Man.

Cheerleader Spotlight: Amy P
This week we welcome a new section to the site highlighting ladies from within each squad, sharing some of their special memories and photo's of their time cheerleading at their respective clubs.
We kick off the "Cheerleader Spotlight" with Manly Seabird, Amy P - who is also featured in Big league this week as one half of the Manly duo competing for the title of Big League Cheerleader of the Year.
Name
Amy P
Years as a cheerleader
This is my 4th year with the Manly Seabirds
Why did you want to become a NRL
cheerleader?
I grew up going to the Manly games with family and
friends and I always watched the girls on the field and wanted to do what they
did. I thought that they looked amazing and that it looked like so much fun!
What is your favourite part of being a
cheerleader?
I love performing – there is something about being
on the field in front of a crowd and dancing that is just so exciting.. But my
favourite thing would have to be getting to know all the girls and the fun
friendships that we have developed.
Most memorable moment as a cheerleader -
on or off the field?
Most memorable moment was the 2011 grandfinal! It
felt so special to be able to be on the field and cheering for Manly. The
atmosphere was amazing and I had such a fun time.
What's it like having your sister on the
squad?
I love having my younger sister Chloe on the squad! This is Chloe's rookie season as a Seabird and as we are
both such busy people, it is something that we can do and share together.
Any funny memories or mishaps while
cheerleading?
When we accidently set off the smoke alarms at Brookvale Oval after a game!!
What are you studying at Uni?
I am currently at Uni studying Pharmacy – and I
absolutely love it. I have previously completed a degree in exercise science as
well.
How do you balance your uni/work/ and
cheerleading commitments?
It is sometimes a little bit hard to do this but I find
cheerleading a great outlet. Any cheerleading commitments are always fun and I
find after, I am more motivated to do uni work.
What makes the Manly Seabirds squad so special to be
apart of?
Our coach Monique always has new and exciting ideas
and surprises for us along the way within the season that all make me feel a
part of the squad. My Team Mates are amazing people to be around and
all the hard work we put in is matched with a whole lot of laughing.
Explain what it was like to audition for
the very first time?
I was so nervous to audition!! I didn’t know what to
expect. When I turned up I saw everyone there and became even more nervous as
they were all stunning girls and amazing dancers. Once the audition process
started, Monique explained what the day was about. Everyone was so lovely and
nervous as well so this made it a little better too.
How would you best describe your
cheerleading coach/director and how have they inspired you?
Monique is an absolute inspiration to me and I know
that I can speak for the whole squad. She is so passionate about what she does
and makes cheerleading such a special experience for all of us. I feel so extremely lucky
to have her as a coach, she really cares about our squad and you can tell from
all the hard work and effort that she puts in!
Where do you see yourself in say 10 years time?
In 10 years time I would like to have travelled and seen different places from all around the world. Hopefully i would have started a family and be helping run the family pharmacy business.

Joanna never gave up on her dream of becoming a cheerleader for the Newcastle Knights when she auditioned unsuccessfully four years ago and kept coming back each year.
“If you fail the first time you keep trying,” she said. “When I found out I got in this year it was the best feeling, I was really happy after all the hard work I put in.”
Joanna recalls ringing everyone she could to tell them the good news, her family are big Knights fans and were very excited for her. So far this season Joanna has been at all but one home game and said that running on to the field is a massive adrenaline rush.
“The first time I ran on I thought wow this is full on, the atmosphere is amazing you can’t help but smile,” Joanna said.
Aside from cheering routines on the field Joanna is also involved with the community through the cheerleaders’ charity and promotion work. Joanna said one of the great aspects of the role is getting to mingle with supporters before the game. “Little kids are really excited to meet you and people come and get there photos with you,” she said.
Joanna has been dancing since she was five-years-old and said it’s a big passion of hers and that she’s picking up the cheerleading routines quickly.
“The routines are a lot of fun I’ve been training and performing all my life so I’m really fitting in well,” she said. “All the girls in the squad are really friendly, the coach is great and I’ve already made some good friends.”
Joanna said she’s getting comments from her friends about being the next Jennifer Hawkins but said she’d rather have a career in dancing. “You never know, if a dancing opportunity comes from being in the cheer squad I would give it a go, every dancer wants to make a career out of dancing,” she said.
From her experience so far she’s definitely keen to turn out to next year’s auditions and have another go at cheerleading. But there is one thing that Joanna isn’t looking forward to and that’s games on those cold winter nights. She’s hoping the rush of the performance and crowd will help her ignore the cold.
Good on you Joanna for working for your dream and continueing to audition each year!! Sometimes it can be very disheartening when your dreams fall short each time you try - so it must make every game & appearance as a Newcastle Knights Cheerleader that much sweeter for her now!! xx
