Dancers may be on the Collingwood Pies' menu?
They've been largely missing from the football scene since the days
of Sydney's Swanettes and Carlton's Bluebirds, but Collingwood appears
to be considering re-introducing dancers at its AFL matches.
The Pies are at pains to point out that the possible plan
does not involve cheerleaders as such, but rather a street-style dance
troupe of approximately six men and six women.
The dancing, if the plan goes ahead, would be part of pre-game entertainment.
Speaking on Thursday morning on Triple M, former Melbourne Storm
cheerleader Jinelle Davidson revealed the Magpies had been conducting
auditions for a troupe.
"There are Collingwood cheerleaders try-outs today, going for a hip-hop team," Davidson said.
Davidson is about to head off to the United States, having
won a highly sought-after place on NFL franchise the Dallas Cowboys'
cheerleading team.
Collingwood president and Triple M host Eddie McGuire appeared
reluctant to divulge too much information about the initiative, but
confirmed "there might be an announcement".

Collingwood's media manager was similarly coy, but confirmed
that auditions for a dancing team were taking place as the club
considered ways to add value to their fans' match-day experience.
The club was clear, however, that rather than cheerleaders, it was looking at the addition of dancers.
Both Carlton and Sydney had high-profile cheerleading teams
during the 1980s. Cheerleaders are commonplace in rugby league,
basketball and Twenty20 cricket in Australia.
