Cheerleader Flashback...Kim Bunny

HOOOORAY!! The season opener is finally here!! Tonights game between the Rabbitohs and the Roosters is always such an exciting match to watch and so in keeping with the theme i thought featuring a South Sydney Cheerleader would be the perfect touch!

Its hard to sum up in words just how truly magic, endearing and hilarious my next "cheerleader flashback" of choice is. "Kim Bunny" as she is known to all her friends was in my opinion the most electric and special girl to ever shake the red and green pom poms! Her crazy sparkly personality is larger than life and she made every training session and game day the most outrageous fun you could imagine!

When i look back on my time at Souths starting out as an extremely nervous, baby faced 17 year old - it was Kim who i looked up to and held so much respect for. She took me under her wing and she was the one girl who instantly made you feel welcomed and at ease. Her hilarious one liners would have you crying from laughter and her love for cheerleading was so so infectious! This girl is one in a billion and im sure she will bring a huge smile to your face when you read through her many wonderful memories from her cheerleading days at South Sydney. Enjoy xx

"I began my cheerleading career in 2002 when Souths re-entered the NRL competition and i never looked back! I cheered for them from 2002-2004 and then I had the 2005 season off to have my first gorgeous son Kyan. I then came back as hot as ever (lol) for the 2006 season.

I loved loved loved everything about being a South Sydney Cheerleader. I made so many great friendships and dressing room shinnanigins made those chilly afternoons toasty in no time. Our choreographer - the delicious Miss Monique was our best asset. I miss all the fun times cheering on those bunnies on the sideline, dancing in the rain, Monday night training and the LOADS of laughs that we had along the way. Most of all I miss seeing my cheer-family in particular Dea Bunny, Hayley Bunny (now seabird), Noelle Bunny, Kahlia Bunny (now seabird), Row Bunny and of course Miss Mon Bunny!

Oh there are so many funny memories…. I narrowed it down to just a couple… there are too many to list and I can’t reveal all of our secrets lol!!

1. Season 1 we had “PALACE” spread across our butts lol hmm not sure if there was a hidden agenda?? We were sponsored by the Coogee Palace and it was such an odd phrase to have across our uniform!

2. Funniest ever was our bus trip to Russell Crowes property to dance and cheer for the local football team (Aroura). It was a super early start! We laughed so hard nearly the whole 6 hour drive, it was exhausting! I think I may have been the result of most of those laughs… I was always the one to come up with the quick one liners that left everyone speechless. We danced all day and into the very late afternoon and it wasn’t until I looked back on photos that I realised I had my top on upside down. Bahahahaha that was seriously a blonde moment. I have cherished this day forever. How lucky was I to have experienced such a great day with some of the greatest girls alive.

 3. Monday night training is where all the fun happened. It was there that the infamous phrase “shoulders back boobies on the rack” was born. I have used this as a posture tool and a life lesson since. We would train at the club so I would take my nan who became “Nan Bunny" to all the girls and she should go down in history as the oldest cheerleader ever! She was part of our support team (ever though she backs the Tigers)! She loved coming to watch the girls and is still going strong at 87.

While dancing for Souths I learnt that it is important to be honest and true to yourself and others. While I was already both of these things lol, over the years girls came and went for different reasons but our small family always stayed together. I love the girls for everything they had to offer and everyone brought their own piece of sparkle to the team! Some of us just shined brighter –jokes! Well not really, I was a pretty big sparkle lol!! I learnt quick smart that fake, skanky and bitchy get you nowhere and that you weren't just apart of a cheerleading team but you were first and foremost apart of a family.

I made the decision in 2006 that it would be my final season as a South Sydney Rabbitohs Cheerleader and that I would hang up my pom poms for good! I think Souths got wind of my decision and that’s why the decided there were no longer to be Cheerleaders on the sideline in 2007?!?!?!

My cheer-heart now belongs to the Manly Seabirds - hands down the hottest cheerleaders ever! I like to pretend that I am considered part of their team even though I no longer take the field! I still get excited to see the girls on the tv and they are getting more glamorous every season, but I guess when you work with the most glamorous Miss Monique, its hard not to absorb the glamorous-ness.

In 2006 I opened my own dance studio “ROXY dance Studio” in Greystanes for ages 3 years + and is growing each year. Dance is such a big part of my life and brings me so much joy and love. I’m glad I can spread the sparkle on to the tiniest of angels in our classes and make everyone feel beautiful and special…..not to mention that we are probably the only dance studio out there with an even dance-laugh ratio!! We pride ourselves on the kids having fun first while learning art of dance and movement.

In 2007 I married my hubby Brad and we added the gorgeous little Spunk Levi to our clan in 2010. I have a great husband, 2 spectacular children and a great business and the most special friends and family a girl could want!!! Life is so precious and I am loving every minute of it!!!

Sparkle and Kisses

  1. Those were some uniforms! I was a cheerleader throughout my academic years so I never got to wear anything like this. But as this post went, cheerleading isn't all about the uniforms. It's about the friendships you've made and experiences you went through together that make being a cheerleader so memorable.
